Technical SEO
I help clients identify and resolve the underlying technical issues that can hold a website back in search engine results. From crawling and indexing problems to structured data, site performance, international SEO, and content-level technical issues, I work closely with you to diagnose the root cause and implement practical fixes.
A Highly Experienced Technical SEO Consultant
Over the years, I have helped many businesses identify and fix technical issues with their websites, resolve crawling and indexing problems, and implement the kind of long-term technical foundations that allow search engines to properly discover, understand, and rank their content. From my base in Brighton, I have assisted companies across the UK and internationally.
Working with me means you benefit from:
- Over 20 years of SEO experience – Working client-side, agency-side, and as a freelance consultant, including five years as Head of SEO for an award-winning agency.
- In-depth technical knowledge – I have worked on many hundreds of websites and understand the common technical issues that affect them, as well as how to fix them.
- Strong web development skills – I can often implement many fixes directly, or I can work with your developer to resolve the problems.
- Clear, prioritised recommendations – I focus on the technical actions that will deliver measurable improvements and provide regular updates on progress.
- Support for in-house teams and agencies – Helping to sense check technical work, guide implementation, and improve outcomes.
- A practical, results-focused approach – With an emphasis on fixing the issues that genuinely impact visibility and crawl efficiency, rather than chasing vanity metrics.

Arranging a Technical SEO Audit
Effective technical SEO consultancy is only possible once the underlying issues affecting your website have been properly identified and understood. For this reason, my work with new clients almost always starts with a Technical SEO Audit.
The audit is a thorough, manual review of your website, covering everything from crawlability and indexation to site structure, performance, structured data, and content-level technical issues. Rather than simply running your site through a software tool and exporting the results, I analyse the findings in the context of your business, your market, and your objectives, and deliver a custom-written report with clear, prioritised recommendations.
Once the audit is complete, we can then work together to implement the fixes, either directly or alongside your in-house team or existing developers. For clients with more complex sites, or those who want a longer-term plan of action, the audit can also be translated into a 6- or 12-month SEO roadmap.
What My Technical SEO Consultancy Services Cover
Technical SEO is a broad discipline, and the right focus for your website will depend on the specific issues uncovered during the audit. The areas I regularly assist clients with include:
Crawling and indexing issues
Search engines can only rank content they can discover, crawl, and index. I help clients diagnose and resolve issues such as misconfigured robots.txt files, incomplete or inaccurate XML sitemaps, 4xx and 5xx crawl errors, orphaned pages, blocked resources, soft 404s, and pages that are incorrectly set to noindex. I will also review your crawl budget, internal linking, and how your site is being treated in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
Site structure and security
A logical, well-organised site architecture helps both search engines and users navigate your content. I can assist with implementing HTTPS and fixing mixed content warnings, optimising URL structures, setting up and refining breadcrumb navigation, improving category and subcategory hierarchies, and ensuring that canonical tags are correctly applied to avoid duplicate content issues.
Site performance and user experience signals
Page speed, Core Web Vitals, and mobile-friendliness are all important technical factors that influence search rankings and user engagement. I help clients identify and fix performance bottlenecks, including slow server response times, render-blocking resources, unoptimised images, and layout shifts, and ensure that the site works well across devices and screen sizes.
Structured data and schema markup
Structured data helps search engines understand the content on your pages and can improve how your listings appear in search results. I assist clients with implementing, testing, and refining schema markup for articles, products, FAQs, reviews, local businesses, events, and more, ensuring it is correctly validated and aligned with Google’s guidelines.
International SEO
If your website targets multiple countries or languages, getting the technical setup right is critical. I help clients implement and troubleshoot hreflang tags, resolve issues with incorrect or conflicting language and region targeting, review their URL structure for international content (whether using subdomains, subdirectories, or country-code top-level domains), and ensure that each version of the site is being indexed correctly.
Content-level technical issues
Even on well-built sites, content-level issues can significantly limit search visibility. I help clients identify and address thin content, duplicate content caused by parameter handling or pagination, missing or poorly written title tags and meta descriptions, inconsistent heading structures, and other metadata issues that affect how pages are understood and ranked.

Frequently Asked Questions
Some of the common questions I am asked about this service.
Do I need a Technical SEO Audit before we start?
In almost all cases, yes. A Technical SEO Audit is the essential first step, as it gives us both a clear understanding of what is affecting your site and what needs to be prioritised. Without an audit, any consultancy work risks becoming guesswork. The only exception is when a client comes to me with a recent, thorough audit already in hand, in which case we can often move straight to implementation.
What happens after the audit is complete?
Once the audit has been delivered and reviewed, we will discuss the findings together and agree on a plan of action. Some clients choose to translate the audit into a 6- or 12-month SEO roadmap, which sets out the technical work alongside any other SEO activity. I will recommend the best approach based on your specific circumstances.
How long does it take to see results from technical SEO work?
This is very much a “how long is a piece of string” type of question. It depends on the history of your website, the severity of the issues being fixed, and how competitive your niche is (among many other factors). Search engines need time to re-crawl your site, process the changes, and update rankings accordingly. Some fixes, such as resolving indexing issues, can show results within days or weeks, while others may take several months to fully take effect.
Why is technical SEO so important?
Without a solid technical foundation, even the best content and the strongest backlink profile will struggle to deliver results. Technical SEO ensures that search engines can discover, crawl, understand, and index your content efficiently. If there are underlying issues with crawlability, indexation, site performance, or structured data, your visibility will be limited no matter how much work you put into other areas of SEO.
Can you work alongside our in-house team or existing agency?
Yes. I regularly work alongside in-house teams, developers, and agencies to provide technical SEO guidance, sense-check work, and support implementation. My role is to complement existing resources rather than replace them.
